Why Vitamin C and Glutathione are so much more Powerful Together


It seems we have all become obsessed with aging. And why not, who doesn’t want to live longer and live healthier? The discussion of how to achieve longer lives and not feel the effects of aging is a discussion worth having.

All cell metabolism in our bodies produces waste products. One term for these waste products is free radicals. We have mechanisms to carry off these waste products or free radicals and eliminate them through our skin and through our excretory systems. As we grow older, our bodies slowly lose the ability to efficiently process these by-products of cell metabolism. This build-up of waste products in our cells is what causes aging. This is why we lose flexibility, why we feel stiff in the morning, and why our organs don’t have the vitality we once enjoyed.

The process of aging is similar to the rust that accumulates on metal. This process is termed oxidation and can be described as the breakdown of vibrant tissue, producing free radicals. We have substances in our bodies that work to neutralize and eliminate free radicals to reduce their damage to our tissues. These substances are called antioxidants.

Plants and animals, as well as all other forms of life, have their own defenses against free radicals and oxidative damage. These antioxidants are necessary to the survival of all living things.

Most of us have probably heard that Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant. It neutralizes free radicals and prevents damage to our cells that could cause more aging. Because our body doesn't produce vitamin C, we need to get it from our diet. Vitamin C is found in citrus fruits, berries, potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, broccoli and spinach.

Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant that doesn’t get the attention that Vitamin C does. Glutathione is one of the body’s most important and potent antioxidants. While most antioxidants are found in the foods we eat, glutathione is produced by our body.

There are a number of reasons why our body’s glutathione level may become depleted, including poor diet, chronic disease, infection and constant stress. Our body’s ability to produce glutathione can also be interfered with by prescription drugs and recreational drugs. Glutathione levels are also known to naturally decrease with age.

Vitamin C and Glutathione work together to protect us from the damaging effects of oxidation and free radicals. We could say Vitamin C and Glutathione are wonderful teammates that empower each other.

Researchers have discovered that Vitamin C may help increase glutathione levels by attacking free radicals first, thereby sparing glutathione. They also found that Vitamin C helps reprocess glutathione by converting oxidized glutathione back to its active form. In fact, researchers have found that taking Vitamin C supplements increased glutathione levels in white blood cells in healthy adults. In one study, adults took 500–1,000 mg of Vitamin C daily for 13 weeks, leading to an 18% increase of glutathione in white blood cells. Another study showed that taking 500 mg of Vitamin C supplements per day increased glutathione in red blood cells by 47%.

For its part, Glutathione attacks free radicals while working to recycle other antioxidants. During this process, Glutathione sacrifices itself while attacking free radicals and stopping further oxidation from occurring. Glutathione also converts worn out Vitamin C back to its active form.

In fact, Glutathione is so strongly tied to health and well-being, that scientists can use Glutathione levels to predict longevity. The higher our Glutathione levels, the longer we can expect to live.
